Albert's New Look

Jim Kelsey looks at the current transformation of the Royal Albert Hall.

Queen Victoria’s most popular memorial to her husband, the Royal Albert Hall, is undergoing a tranquil £63 million transformation which has already doubled its floor area. A three-floor subterranean extension at the rear of the building is virtually invisible to the general public. With 60 per cent of the work completed, the Hall now has scenery loading and service bays, modern dressing rooms and residents’ car parking. By 2003 concert-goers will promenade wider corridors, be cooled by air conditioning, enjoy a far better acoustic as well as the boom of the restored organ.
