Towards a Definition of the Dacians
J. G. Nandris investigates an Iron Age culture centred on modern Romania
The Dacians were an Iron Age population during the first one or two centuries BC and AD in the area of modern Romania, the coevals of the western European Celtic Iron Age peoples. After incorporation in the Roman Empire Dacian legionaries are known to have served in Britain, on the northern frontier. In 1980 the Dacians came again to Britain in the form of an exhibition of a wide range of archaeological material which has previously been on show in Italy and Belgium, and will hereafter be seen in Germany and the USA. The exhibition was presented under the Romanian-British Cultural Exchange Programme, at Billingham Art Gallery. This therefore is the occasion to look at some of the implications of this kind of material for historians and archaeologists.
