'A good teacher does all the thinking for us' is a statement which many students in years 12 and 13 will happily endorse. They cry, 'Just tell us what we need to know, sir/miss' and the teacher responds by distributing another handout. The students feel secure and many of them are pleased with their final results. Reading is seen as a necessary evil - something to be kept to a minimum and only carried out in order to complete the worksheet, get the notes or keep sir/miss happy.
 
Let me show you a better way.
 
Contrary to your suspicions, the reading of history books will not only enable you greatly to improve your AS/A2 grades, but also to enjoy your studies, to enrich your life and to prepare you for higher education and/or your future career. By reading more history you will get inside the subject. Facts and narratives will become part of you and you will participate in debates. In short, you will begin to own the subject. This article will explain how this is possible and build your confidence by giving you tips on how to get going.
