The Impact of the Two World Wars on Africa
Taken from two eight-volume enterprises marking the coming of age of African history, Michael Crowder looks at the African reactions to the European colonial presence, rather than with the doings of the Europeans themselves.
Only twenty-one years ago the then Regius Professor of History at Oxford, Hugh Trevor-Roper, was able to write that 'Perhaps in the future there will be some African history to teach. But at present there is none; there is only the history of the Europeans in Africa. The rest is darkness. And darkness is not the subject of history'. These two enterprises lay this myth to rest.
