Gezicht op Nieuw Amsterdam by Johannes Vingboons (1664), an early picture of Nieuw Amsterdam made in the year when it was conquered by the English under Richard Nicolls.On the morning of May 6th, 1626 Peter Minuit, director of the fledgling Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam on the island of Manhattes, met with a delegation from the local Lenape Indians and purchased the island from them for trinkets worth an estimated $24. A boulder, called the Shorakkopoch Rock, in woods on the northern tip of Manhattan Island, marks the spot where the negotiations took place.
