It is impossible to get a clear idea of events in the American colonies between 1763 and 1775, unless they are set against a broader background. Like the Industrial and Agrarian Revolutions, the American neither began suddenly nor ended abruptly; throughout the first half of the eighteenth century the problems requiring settlement had developed gradually, in the normal course of working of the Old Colonial System.
