Jerry White’s richly rewarding essay on the social dynamics of Campbell Road, Finsbury Park focused attention on an often-overlooked element of lived life: spatial relationships. This was not merely a way of describing the harsh material realities of daily life in a London slum at the start of the 20th century, but also enabled a preliminary exploration of ideological and cultural themes that continue to preoccupy social historians three decades later.
