Sexuality has relatively recently become an area for serious historical study, and presents interesting theoretical and practical problems. This article looks at the evolution of formal sex education in Britain since the late nineteenth century, the controversies about whether it should take place and who should be responsible, the various ways in which it was carried out, and its changing content.
