'I cannot recall anyone', reflected a Chippenham woman, writing of her wartime memories, 'who had the slightest idea of how tremendous an impact the Americans would have on our lives... the Americans changed England more than the English like to realize and admit'. In researching 'Over Here', a book about the GIs in Britain in the Second World War, the truth of this reflection became increasingly apparent to me.
