On the arch of the Emperor Claudius in Rome the following words, it seems, were inscribed:
Erected by the Senate and People of Rome, because he accepted the surrender of eleven British kings, without incurring any British losses, and because he was the first to subject barbarian tribes across the Ocean to the rule of the Roman people.
