Jonathan Conlin considers a 1990 article on the past, present and future of history broadcasting, whose pessimistic forecasts have not quite come to pass.

The authors’ perspective was coloured, inevitably, by current affairs: the Broadcasting Act (passed that very month) as well as the Education Reform Act 1988, which introduced the National Curriculum. The Broadcasting Act 1990 gave birth to a fifth terrestrial channel and loosened restrictions governing the ownership of independent television franchises.
