Rosemary Burton observes new plans for museums.

What would Sir William Turner, KCB LLD FRS, have made of the plans for Museums Year? This year- long 'celebration' launched on January 24th is intended to mark the centenary of the Museums Association with 'the largest promotional campaign museums and galleries have ever staged in Britain'. Sir William stares sternly out from the first volume of the Museums Association Journal (1901-02), bestowing his Presidential imprimatur upon the publication. He does not look easily amused but, as the initial aims of the Association included 'promotion of museum lectures to working men', he would presumably approve this attempt, one hundred years later, to 'enhance public perception of museums and galleries'.
