Damien Gregory explores jerry-building at Hampton Court
Tudor new technology and Stuart jerry-building are among the surprises being uncovered in the section of Hampton Court Palace devastated by fire at Easter 1986 and now in a process of resurrection. Christopher Wren's Fountain Court, built at the behest of William and Mary is, though, proving something of a challenge. The reconstruction has been a slow and meticulously planned affair, following the Government's immediate post-fire commitment to the full restoration of the damaged area. An on-site exhibition, currently being staged, catalogues the intriguing historical discoveries that have emerged from the fire, and the ambitious restoration programme.
