The International Economy
An end to the old order - Clive Lee looks at the pressures and changes that marked out the 1890s as a frontier post in a settled world economy.
From an economic perspective, especially an international one, history provides few changes dramatic enough to be classified as turning-points. But the 1890s ended a century of relative peace which allowed the international economy to expand and evolve in marked contrast to the twentieth century which combined unprecedented economic advance with immense and frequent dislocation. This decade thus provides a good vantage point from which to evaluate the era of gradual development that preceded it as well as the more intense phase that followed.
