The History of History Today

Derry Moore, 12th Earl of Drogheda, remembers the events surrounding the establishment of History Today magazine.

The new editor of History Today has asked me to contribute some paragraphs about the genesis and early history of the magazine. Unfortunately, the documentation is pretty inadequate, but in the minute book for 1946 of the old Financial News Limited (which still existed as a company although the Financial News had been merged with the Financial Times at the end of 1945) there is an item at the board meeting held in October where we discussed the ‘production of a new popular magazine devoted to history’, and we agreed to the proposal ‘subject to the necessary allocation of paper being obtained from the authorities concerned’.
