Roger Fenton and the Crimean War
T.J. Brady introduces an early photographer at a Victorian front.
'If you could send me, dear, a good view of a nice battle, I should feel extremely obliged.’
So, according to Punch, wrote a young lady to her fiancé in the Crimea, and she added as a postscript: ‘If you could take the view, dear, just in the moment of victory, I should like it all the better.’ We do not know what kind of photographs her friend took with the camera she sent him with this message, but the story serves to indicate how popular and widespread the use of the new invention of photography had become by the time of the Crimean War.
