Of all the institutions in the City of London Lloyd’s is one of the best known by name, if only in the phrase “A1 at Lloyd’s”, which has passed into the language. Familiarity with the name, however, has not brought any corresponding knowledge and understanding of the institution, nor of its curious history, which can be traced back to a time before the City had become a great financial centre.
