Albert Brackmann & the Nazi Adjustment of History
Michael Burleigh charts the career of one of the pillars of the German scholarly establishment under the Third Reich an invaluable middle-man in 're-educating' his pupils and massaging research to suit Nazi ideology.
Much of the apologetic writing for what happened to the German historical profession under Hitler involves concentration upon the figures who were third rate and marginal – the racial anthropologists grafted onto history faculties; as opposed to the central figures of scholarly life. One man who dominated Ostforschung, or multi-disciplinary and institutionalised research on eastern Europe, both while he was alive and, through his pupils, from the grave' was Albert Brackmann (1871-1952).
