James A. Boutilier profiles Dr Alfred Percival Maudslay, a world-wide traveller who inaugurated the study of Mayan civilization in Central America.

Dr Alfred Percival Maudslay, known always by the fellows of the Royal Geographical Society as ‘Mr Maudslay’, was a model of that Victorian figure, ‘the true English gentleman and traveller’.

His career as an explorer, pro-consul, archaeologist, and writer spanned the globe and carried him from Iceland to the islands of the Pacific and the jungles of Guatemala.
