Dr Alfred Percival Maudslay, known always by the fellows of the Royal Geographical Society as ‘Mr Maudslay’, was a model of that Victorian figure, ‘the true English gentleman and traveller’.
His career as an explorer, pro-consul, archaeologist, and writer spanned the globe and carried him from Iceland to the islands of the Pacific and the jungles of Guatemala.
