Manchester University 1851-1951
On its centenary, Maurice Powicke traced the history of the Lanchashire educational establishment.
In March 1851 a modest educational establishment was opened in Manchester. This was the college founded by his trustees under the terms of the will of John Owens, a successful and open-minded businessman who had died five years before, leaving half his estate, over £96,000, for university education. The Owens College grew, in the course of time, into the University of Manchester; and that is why in this year 1951 the University is celebrating its centenary.
