Getting started in AS History

Whether you are taking History as a free-standing AS course, or intending to complete a full Advanced Level qualification, you will need to think seriously about the study techniques you will employ. Some of the skills that you have learned at GCSE will be very useful, but you will also need to be aware of important differences. At AS and A Level you should develop a more independent approach to learning. Of course you can expect direction and support from your teacher, but you should not depend exclusively on notes given in class, nor on one particular textbook. Students who are looking for good grades should become used to seeking information from a variety of sources: from books, magazine and journal articles and the internet – although in the latter case you should be particularly selective and should take advice on appropriate websites. The internet is a great benefit but it can also be a great time waster!
