The above two extracts from speeches relate to questions Chinese in the years before the First World n War. The first was delivered by the Liberal Prime Minister, Campbell-Bannerman, during a Commons debate on February 22nd, 1906. He was endeavouring to summarise what he took to be the British electorate's conscientious revulsion against the employment of coolie labour on the South African Rand.
