It will clear the air from the start if I make two unambiguous points in respect of The Great War and The British People. The first is that Dr Winter has written what will surely come to be regarded as a true classic in the writing of twentieth-century British social history. The second is that until now the field has been held by my own The Deluge: British Society and The First World War, published twenty-one years ago.
