The British Universities Newsreel Database

Luke McKernan introduces the British Universities Newsreel Database, together with plans for its development.

Anyone wishing to consult any British newspaper, past or present, can do so at the British Library Newspaper Library; it is one of the major national research resources.  There is, however, no such single resource for newsfilm. The BUND contains records of 160,000 British cinema newsreels from 1910 to 1979, integrated with 80,000 digitised newsreel production documents. It now plans to link these records to downloadable copies of the films themselves, moving closer to a virtual British Newsfilm Library.
