University History
A survey of reactions and prospects for history in British Universities after the Dearing Report.
In the wake of last year's Research Assessment Exercise, the audit of the academic profession by the Higher Education Funding Council, and with the issue of top-up fees and student contributions to course fees again being raised, History departments around the country are facing some sobering realities and in many cases a need to evolve. As the discipline changes and the different departments meet the challenges they face in varying ways, so the debate about what is happening in Higher Education and history continues. This broad survey of what is taking place in Britain's history departments aims to highlight these areas of development and controversy.
