Mocoron – a refugee settlement in a remote area of eastern Honduras, hot, humid and surrounded by jungle – was buzzing. 185 men, women and children were being prepared fox repatriation to Nicaragua after spending up to ten years in Honduras as refugees. In recent months the process has become a weekly event.
At 7am, with roll calls underway, families clambered into five crowded lorries for the journey to the Rio Coco where the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and the International Red Cross representatives handed them over to colleagues based on the Nicaraguan side. By lunchtime the long dug-out canoes had shipped them all across the border, and a new chapter in their lives had begun.
