Unearthing Birdoswald
Birdoswald is a Roman fort on the western end of Hadrian's Wall about six miles from Brampton in Cumbria. It has a fine position with glorious views across the Irthing valley; it might well have been the site of King Arthur's last battle. Birdoswald is easy to reach and has everything going for it.
Or will have. Until now it has been the poor relation among wall forts. Further east, Vindolanda, with its excellent museum and reconstructed turret, and Housesteads, the best known fort, attract the crowds.
